Komodo Details Innovative Design Common sense and outside the box thinking led to a solution that is unique in the business: a self-opening unit. It's easier to pull down a heavy top than to pull it open. No lifting is needed to open the lid. The tension in the spring-loaded hinge is user adjustable and the trigger latch self-locks to the base with no extra effort. Just close the lid and click, it's locked. No bending over a hot BBQ to tighten lid supports. Airflow is key to temperature control, the lower draft door seals into CNC laser cut frame assembly that ensure a perfect airtight seal. A laser-cut low-airflow wheel gives you exact settings. The main grill gasket utilizes a unique upper-inner gasket that fits against/into our lower gasket insuring smoke stays in and air stays out. The damper door opening is flush to the bottom of the unit making ash removal easy. A removable screen keeps hot coals safely inside. Damper top utilizes a large stainless steel rod machined into a modified acme thread,. The top can be raised or lowered quicker with far fewer turns. Its shallow cup shape keeps rain out during those long low-and-slow over-night cooks. A gasket shuts the unit air tight when desired or for extinguishing the fire. No troublesome steel rusting bolts. Refractory Materials - Not Ceramic - The material used in a ceramic grills' body is of the utmost importance. Ceramic by definition is a hard brittle material. In contrast, Komodo is not ceramic—not fired and brittle. Harbison Walker is the world leader in materials designed for high temperate applications. Their engineers helped design, engineer and develop a two-layer sandwich of a dense inner layer and a lightweight outer insulating layer. During use, Komodo's often reach 800° F. The inside hotface is capable of withstanding temperatures of 2200° F. It holds and reflects the heat. The insulating layer keeps heat in and reduces its loss resulting in fuel economy. Wall thickness varies from 1.5" to 2.0", not including the additional thickness of the firebox sitting inside. Testing found that with little fuel, this design achieved cooking temperatures very quickly and efficiently. It is quick and easy to adjust and stabilize the temperature. Fireboxes are exposed to very high temperatures. In most fireboxes the different diameters of this donut shaped part expand and contract unevenly and they fail. Komodo's unique two piece firebox eliminates cracking. The bands supporting the lid structure are cast inside the body. This ensures perfect alignment and fit—no external bands to adjust, rust or replace. Komodo's come fully loaded with stainless steel grills, charcoal basket, heat deflector/pizza stone, EZQ rotisserie sleeves, Guru/Stoker temperature control device port, tile repair kit, tile sealer, socket wrench to adjust spring tension, heavy duty wheels and easy to open crate. All have Komodo's quality and user-friendly refinements but are built for different budgets and needs. Discover all you need to know about a particular Komodo Kamado model. Komodo produces two cookers, the OTB 23 and the Classic 22. These are available in our different packages, the Deluxe, Supreme, Supreme Plus and the new Gen II Ultimate.
